(ha ha) let&#8217;s talk about  warranties and insurance.\u00a0 Apple kindly bestows each new iPhone with a <a title=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/legal\/warranty\/iphone\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/legal\/warranty\/iphone\/\" target=\"_blank\">1-year limited warranty<\/a>, but we (<em>always<\/em>, <strong>ALWAYS<\/strong>) recommend that you take advantage of Apple&#8217;s extended warranty plans for computers and iOS devices.\u00a0 In tandem with the October 14, 2011 release of the new iPhone 4S, Apple is debuting <a title=\"http:\/\/store.apple.com\/us\/product\/S4575\" href=\"http:\/\/store.apple.com\/us\/product\/S4575\" target=\"_blank\">AppleCare+ for iPhone<\/a>, which for <strong>$99<\/strong> adds an additional year to your warranty period, extends your phone support period from 90 days to 2 years and &#8212; wait for it &#8212; <strong>covers <em>&#8220;up to two incidents of accidental damage from handling&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> (with each incident subject to a $49 service fee).\u00a0 This is the first time, to our knowledge, that Apple has offered accidental damage coverage on <strong>any<\/strong> product!\u00a0 Note that the plan will be available for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS, but it must be purchased together with new equipment to be covered.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind that AppleCare does <em>not<\/em> cover theft, and that&#8217;s where a third-party insurance  plan comes in.\u00a0 <a title=\"http:\/\/www.worthavegroup.com\/iphone-insurance?gclid=CJaMkPOAvqsCFRdUgwodUyI8rQ\" href=\"http:\/\/www.worthavegroup.com\/iphone-insurance?gclid=CJaMkPOAvqsCFRdUgwodUyI8rQ\" target=\"_blank\">Worth Ave. Group<\/a> offers a 1-year plan to protect your 32GB iPhone 4 against theft and accidental damage for <strong>$89<\/strong>, while <a title=\"http:\/\/www.ensquared.com\/catalog\/iphone-insurance\/1-year-accidental-damage-plus-lost-stolen\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ensquared.com\/catalog\/iphone-insurance\/1-year-accidental-damage-plus-lost-stolen\" target=\"_blank\">Ensquared<\/a> has a 1-year plan which covers theft, damage <strong>and loss<\/strong> for about <strong>$99<\/strong> (the iPhone 4 has to be less than 90 days old).\u00a0 Your mobile carrier might be able to provide coverage too, but not all carriers cover iPhones&#8230;<a title=\"http:\/\/www.att.net\/s\/editorial.dll?fromspage=design\/CDLS10\/ch\/smct\/toolContent.html&amp;categoryid=&amp;only=y&amp;bfromind=19060&amp;eeid=7626762&amp;_sitecat=3563&amp;dcatid=0&amp;eetype=article&amp;render=y&amp;ac=12&amp;ck=&amp;ch=smartcontrol&amp;cat=smct&amp;serviceTopic=2022\" href=\"http:\/\/www.att.net\/s\/editorial.dll?fromspage=design\/CDLS10\/ch\/smct\/toolContent.html&amp;categoryid=&amp;only=y&amp;bfromind=19060&amp;eeid=7626762&amp;_sitecat=3563&amp;dcatid=0&amp;eetype=article&amp;render=y&amp;ac=12&amp;ck=&amp;ch=smartcontrol&amp;cat=smct&amp;serviceTopic=2022\" target=\"_blank\">AT&amp;T does<\/a>, for a monthly premium of about <strong>$7<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>What is that I hear?\u00a0 You dropped your iPhone 4, the screen&#8217;s cracked and you <em>don&#8217;t<\/em> have AppleCare+ or third-party insurance?\u00a0 Well, you still have a few options:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><a title=\"http:\/\/support.apple.com\/kb\/index?page=servicefaq&amp;geo=United_States&amp;product=iphone\" href=\"http:\/\/support.apple.com\/kb\/index?page=servicefaq&amp;geo=United_States&amp;product=iphone\" target=\"_blank\">Request Apple Out-of-Warranty Service<\/a><\/strong>: Apple can, <em>at its discretion<\/em>, repair or replace your iPhone if it&#8217;s suffered accidental damage (including water damage!), at a cost of\u00a0 <strong>up to $199<\/strong> &#8212; which is a <em>lot<\/em> cheaper than buying a new iPhone (at <strong>$400-$600<\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Find a reputable iOS device repair company<\/strong>: You  can expect to spend somewhere in the range of <strong>$90 &#8211; $150 on parts and labor<\/strong> to replace a damaged iPhone 4 screen, but there are deals to be had out there\u2026just remember, <em>buyer beware<\/em>!\u00a0  If the deal seems too good to be true&#8230;it probably is.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do It Yourself<\/strong>: If you feel  like taking matters into your own hands, you can get parts and <strong>free<\/strong> repair guides from <a title=\"http:\/\/www.ifixit.com\/iPhone-Parts\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ifixit.com\/iPhone-Parts\" target=\"_blank\">iFixit.com<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>While insurance coverage is great, it&#8217;s still no picnic if your iPhone is lost or (gasp!) stolen &#8212; wouldn&#8217;t it be better if you could track it down?\u00a0 Well, thank your lucky stars that Apple provides its <a title=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/iphone\/find-my-iphone-setup\/\" href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/iphone\/find-my-iphone-setup\/\" target=\"_blank\">Find My iPhone service<\/a>!\u00a0 This handy (and free, for iOS v4.2 and above) service  from Apple allows you to track the location of your mislaid iPhone on a  map, display messages on the iPhone (&#8220;This iPhone is lost, can you help  it find its mommy?&#8221;) or if need be, remotely lock or even <strong>wipe it<\/strong>, to  protect your privacy.<\/p>\n<p>While we&#8217;re on the topic of crime deterrents, we&#8217;ll pull a Columbo and mention <em>&#8220;One more thing&#8230;.&#8221;<\/em> If you haven&#8217;t done so already, <strong>ENABLE THE LOCK CODE ON YOUR IPHONE!<\/strong> If you don&#8217;t, you are leaving your sensitive, private data out on the front porch for anyone to walk away with!<\/p>\n<p>There you have it &#8212;
